Laser Your Refractive Error Away

Laser eye surgery is fantastic for treating and managing a range of refractive errors, including myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

However, even though they are popular, this doesn’t mean that laser eye surgery is right for everyone. To help find if laser eye surgery is right for you, we offer consultations where we check to see if your eyes are healthy enough for surgery and will give you the desired results.

Please book a consultation with us today! We can’t wait to help you!

What is Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery, or laser vision correction, refers to a group of refractive surgery procedures designed to correct errors in your vision, including myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

Most types of laser eye surgery reshape a part of your eye called the cornea to improve your prescription. However, some types of surgery, like ICL surgery, insert an implantable contact lens between your iris and natural lens to improve your vision.

Which type of laser eye surgery you have depends on your eye health and your prescription. Different factors like your corneal thickness, past and current systemic or ocular diseases, pupil size, or dry eyes can all affect your qualification for laser eye surgery.

It’s also important to remember that laser eye surgery doesn’t guarantee 20/20 vision. Many patients still need glasses and contact lenses following the surgery.

What to do Before Your Surgery

The very first step towards having laser eye surgery is having a consultation. Consultations include an eye exam to determine the prescription you need and if your eyes are healthy enough for surgery.

Once we determine you can have surgery, we can refer you to an ophthalmologist to perform the surgery.

Once you’ve booked a date for the surgery, you will need to keep in mind these tips:

  • Please book off a couple of days off of work or school following the surgery. Your eyes will need a little time to heal, and some activities can leave your eyes feeling dry or irritated, which could affect the healing process.
  • Please have a reliable mode of transportation following your surgery because you will not be able to drive for a couple of days.
  • Before coming into your operation, please refrain from wearing clothes or garments that can attract a lot of dust or lint. These particles can float in the air and can affect the overall outcome of your surgery.
  • Please don’t wear any fragrances, perfumes, or colognes with alcohol when you have your surgery. Alcohol can irritate sensitive eyes and could affect the outcome of the surgery.
  • You may need to stop wearing contact lenses for a few days before the surgery. Some contact lenses can reshape your cornea, which could affect the outcome of your surgery.
  • Please do not wear any makeup to your surgery.

Your eye care team might have different recommendations depending on your case. Please follow them carefully.

What to do Following Your Surgery

Following the surgery, your eye care team will prepare a recovery plan to help ensure the best results from your surgery. This plan can change from patient to patient, but some of the most common aspects include:

  • Wearing protective sunglasses and using eye drops regularly. Your eyes are quite sensitive following the procedure, so wearing sunglasses and using eye drops will help ease irritation, light sensitivity, and dryness. Eye drops also help your eyes heal and prevent possible infection.
  • Booking follow-up appointments. Your eye care team will need to follow-up on your healing process regularly to monitor progress. If there are any complications, your eye care team will adjust the process to serve you best.

Types of Laser Eye Surgery We Consult For

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) eye surgery is one of the most practiced types of laser eye surgery around the world.

During the surgery, your ophthalmologist will create a small flap in your cornea to get access to your corneal stroma. Then they reshape the corneal stroma using an excimer laser to correct your vision. When this is complete, the flap is set back in its original position to heal.

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) surgery completely removes the outermost layer of your cornea, called the epithelium, to get access to the corneal stroma.

The corneal stroma is reshaped using an excimer laser to your required prescription and is left to heal.

SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) eye surgery uses lasers to create a lenticule disc inside your cornea. After creating this disc, a small incision is made with the same laser so your surgeon can extract the lenticule. Removing the lenticule will change the shape of your cornea and correct your vision.

While other types of eye surgery change a part of your eye to achieve clear vision, ICL (implantable contact lens) surgery instead places a contact lens in between your iris and cornea.

The real difference between ICL and other types of laser eye surgery is that ICL is reversible, allowing you to update your prescription even if your eyes need it.
