Focus On The Future

Myopia (nearsightedness) is a refractive error that causes distant objects to appear blurry while nearby objects remain clear.

The condition is on the rise around the world. Studies show that in the near future, almost half of the world’s population will have myopia to some degree. Currently, it affects nearly 30% of Canadians.

Owing to the increasing prevalence of myopia around the world, optometrists have developed methods of slowing its progression in children. Focus on your child’s future — schedule an appointment today to discuss your child’s myopia and get a customized treatment plan.

What Causes Myopia?

Myopia occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved. Typically, myopia develops during childhood. It gets worse as the eyes continue to develop in the teenage years and stabilizes around age 20.

The exact cause of myopia is complex, but myopia may be hereditary. It can also occur spontaneously. The risk of developing myopia appears to increases the less time children spend outside or on close-up tasks.

With myopia on the rise, speculation as to causes of the condition abound. One of our optometrists breaks down fact from fiction in this video.

Why Does Myopia Matter?

Children who struggle to see are often misdiagnosed with behavioural problems. Seeing clearly is imperative for the development of language and sets kids up for success. Kids who have myopia will need glasses or contact lenses to correct their vision.

While less-than-perfect sight can be inconvenient, high degrees of myopia are also associated with an increased risk of more serious eye conditions, some of which can lead to blindness. The risk of retinal detachment, cataracts, and open-angle glaucoma all increase in myopic patients.

Myopia Control Methods

MiSight contact lenses are soft, daily disposable contact lenses that are proven to slow myopia progression in some children by up to 59%.

The lenses use peripheral defocus technology to prevent the eyes from growing longer.

MiyoSmart lenses might be easier for kids to use because they’re glasses rather than contact lenses. They also use peripheral defocus technology to slow the progression of myopia progression. Studies show they’re effective for most kids who use them.

Atropine is a medication shown to reduce the progression of myopia. It’s available in both eye drop or ointment form.

Orthokeratology, commonly known as ortho-k, uses contact lenses that are specially fitted to the wearer. They temporarily reshape the cornea. Often worn overnight and removed during the day, the lenses work while your child sleeps.

The results from wearing ortho-k lenses are reversible if you discontinue use. But as long as your child keeps wearing them, results can be maintained.
